IndyCar wants even higher speeds

THEIndyCar is undoubtedly one of the most impressive disciplines in terms of the speeds reached by the pilots. Ed Carpenter notably won the pole at the Indy 500 by qualifying at an average speed of 228,762 mph (368 km/h). But the lap record on the Indianapolis oval remains to be credited to Arie Luyendyk who set the lap record at an average speed of 237,498mph (382km/h)… in 1996. The organizers of the discipline wish regain these performances even if Dan Wheldon's fatal accident during the final of the 2011 Championship on the Las Vegas oval still remains in everyone's memory.

Officials will therefore seek to combine performance and safety by studying several points where innovations are constantly progressing. “In the short term, we will see increasing changes to our cars across components such as aerodynamics, engine power and tires”, commented Derrick Walker, IndyCar president of operations and competition. “In a way, we will be going back to the future. IndyCar racing has always been about innovation and speed and our goal is to open the door to that again. We will start with our current cars, giving our teams and suppliers more possibilities. We will always be concerned about cost control, but that does not mean that we cannot make improvements to offer more passion during races while respecting safety conditions. »
