Marco Andretti quits Indycar full-time

An unexpected choice. Marco Andretti dropped a small bombshell on Friday evening in the world of Indycar. The American driver, son of Michael Andretti, owner of Andretti Autorsport announced that he would not be present for the entire 2021 season in the Honda n °98.

“I have thought a lot over the last few months and have made the decision to make some changes to my motor racing activities for 2021, which I have shared with my father,” he wrote on social media. “I am lucky enough to be able to race the entire season at Andretti Autosport in IndyCar if I want it. But I want to achieve something different and somewhere start from scratch. »

It must be said that the 33-year-old driver has only known IndyCarou almost, since his debut in 2006 and always with the same team. After 15 seasons and two victories, he wants to concentrate on the challenges he still faces.

“I will continue to drive, the passion remains intact and I still have to tick a few boxes before I retire. I remain very hungry for the Indy 500 which I absolutely want to win. I came close and am in the mix every year. Getting pole last year was incredible but it's not enough. »

The man with three podiums on the Indy 500 will therefore compete in the flagship race of the IndyCarette year. He hopes to add a few tests of the American formula to “keep in hand”. Andretti also wants to get involved in the paddock and the team in a different way.

Above all, he looks towards endurance for the future. “I would like to do some races in the championship IMSA with my cousin Jarett, which would be really fun. Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans are on my list. »

This decision explains why Marco Andretti was not yet officially announced at Andretti Autosport, alongside Colton Herta, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Alexander Red
