Newgarden on pole at Gateway ahead of Bourdais, Pagenaud fourth

Josef Newgarden (Penske) is not ready to cede his leadership in IndyCar. The 2017 champion took pole position on Friday August 24 on the Gateway oval (Illinois) and in the process picked up a point to increase his lead to 36 points over Alexander Red (Andretti).

“We are only half way there, concedes the 28-year-old American. But I feel full of confidence and Chevrolet has provided us with a powerful package. » This is the second pole for Josef Newgarden in 2019.

At his side on the starting grid will be Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing). Le Manceau registers a real performance with a team with a smaller budget than Penske and company. “It was a very solid effort and the guys on the team gave me a great car, he enthused.

It was quite similar to my run in Phoenix (where he took pole in 2018. Editor’s note). The first two corners of the oval were quite slippery, but I gave everything and I am very satisfied with the result. » This is Sébastien Bourdais' best result in qualifying this year.

The second Frenchman involved and major player in the fight for the title (3rd to 41 points from Josef Newgarden), simon pagenaud (Penske), took the fourth time, behind Will Power (Penske). “The first round was very difficult, explained the winner of the 500 Indianapolis 2019. The car was moving a lot. I was very active behind the wheel in turns 1 and 3.

Then car woke up for the second timed lap. I am very happy with this performance. It should be a good race. »

The Gateway 500 event will begin on Sunday August 25 at 2:45 a.m. French time and will be broadcast on Canal+ Sport Weekend delayed at 7:50 a.m.
