The American won the event with a far-sighted strategy. Leader of the event until the last quarter of an hour, the Penske driver stopped in the pits a second time just as the rain returned. With the Barber circuit becoming increasingly wet, Josef Newgarden increased his pace to build a fifteen-second lead over Ryan Hunter Reay (Andretti).

Victory seemed within reach Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing). The Frenchman had in fact taken the gamble of staying on the track on slick tires, but the strengthening of the downpour with less than ten minutes to go forced the Sarthois to turn towards the pits. The four-time Champ Car champion came out of the pits in fourth place, and was overtaken by Robert Wicken (Schmidt Peterson).
Leader of the general classification before the start, Alexander Red (Andretti) finished at the bottom of the Top 10, just like simon pagenaud (Penské).
There was no shortage of platoon battles:
That. Was. Intense.
