Newgarden titled at Laguna Seca, Pagenaud vice-champion

Josef Newgarden led an uneventful race to win his second IndyCar title. Very offensive, Simon Pagenaud fell back at the end of the event and passed Alexander Rossi for the position of vice-champion after a race won by rookie Colton Herta.

Newgarden titled at Laguna Seca, Pagenaud vice-champion

He played his all valiantly, but that was not enough. simon pagenaud (Penske) must be satisfied with the honorary rank of 2019 vice-champion ofIndyCar at the end of the final held in Laguna Seca (California), this Sunday, September 22.

The Frenchman, third in the general classification before the start, had to win at best and count on a sixth place from leader Josef Newgarden (Penske) if he hoped to be titled. The winner of the Indianapolis 500, who started sixth, performed some great maneuvers, like this rough duel with Alexander Red (Andretti):

The Poitevin rider, who moved up to third place behind Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi), however slowed the pace after his last pit-stop. Rejected fifth, Simon Pagenaud overtook Felix Rosenqvist (Chip Ganassi) then harassed the experienced Scott Dixon. Unfortunately, the latter had kept enough seconds of “Push to Pass” to protect himself from overtaking.

Extremely wise, Josef Newgarden (Penske) won his second title after a first award in 2017. The 28-year-old American never seemed sharp and made sure to manage his mechanics (8th); it was a successful tactic.

Alexander Rossi, often lacking traction, fell one place in the championship (3rd).

Victory went to debutant Colton Herta (Harding Steibrenner Racing). Already a winner in Austin (Texas) last spring, Brian Herta's son lifts the same winner's trophy as his father exactly 20 years ago in Monterey. Will Power (Penske) and Scott Dixon complete the podium.

The second Frenchman hired, Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing) finished in seventh position, after gaining no less than 12 places!
