Pagenaud satisfied with the Aeroscreen: “Many doubts already resolved”

Along with Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport), the Frenchman took part in the second tests of the Aeroscreen, at Barber. The first on the road and in the rain before its introduction in IndyCar next season.

Pagenaud satisfied with the Aeroscreen: “Many doubts already resolved”

What were your first impressions?

Very good. The quality of the screen is truly phenomenal. It is thick and visibility is good. When we removed one of the tear-offs (transparent plastic films. Ed.), we really realized the quality of the screen design.

In the rain, we rode about ten laps, and it was better than with a helmet, even if I didn't ride in traffic. As the inclination of the windshield is quite significant, the water disperses quickly. And my helmet remained dry, which is a big advantage in terms of fogging.

Are there still reasons for concern?

It's hot in the car. But we worked on different scoops to direct the air towards the pilot, and we made good progress throughout the day. We have four ventilation systems: under the windshield at the front of the car, in the nose, another at the top of the windshield directed towards the driver, and one which attaches to the helmet.

THEIndyCar works to redirect even more air to the driver. The problem is mostly getting the air circulating in the cockpit, but the two holes in the snout help with that.

Does the Aeroscreen affect the handling of the car?

We didn't find a big difference, although it is difficult to compare because the asphalt has just been resurfaced in Barber. In any case, we haven't changed anything between our last race there and these tests. You still lose a little perception of distances, but after 10 laps, I got used to it.

You also lose a bit of connection with the track, but that's part of the evolution of safety, which I'm a fan of. Besides, I find that these cars have a really futuristic look. I think it can attract young audiences.

Between now and the start of the season, what will need to be perfected?

Many doubts have already been resolved, but we will have to work on the tear-offs. When do we remove them? Will we have time, in 6 seconds, to clean the windshield? How will it be in traffic?

Are we going to have a lot of dirt on the screen? But I don't think it will be any different from the helmet. The biggest challenge will be the heat. It's going to take a little while, but it's only October.
