Power on pole for the Indy GP

Will Power (Team Penske) took his third pole at the Indianapolis GP this Friday evening, becoming the third greatest pole-sitter in IndyCar as he also won the 51st pole of his career, which places him behind Mario Andretti (67) and AJ Foyt (53).

The double winner of the event preceded Robert Wickens (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) by less than a tenth, the rookie having come close to a second pole in IndyCar after shining at the season opener at the St Petersburg GP ( Florida).

Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing) completed the top three ahead of James Hinchcliffe (Schmidt Peterson Motosports), Jordan King (Ed Carpenter Racing) and defending champion Josef Newgarden (Team Penske), the last driver to qualify for the Firestone Fast Six.

simon pagenaud (Team Penske) narrowly missed the last qualifying session as he placed seventh, falling three hundredths behind his winning American teammate in Phoenix (Arizona) and Alabama. The 2016 champion will be one to watch as he has also won this Grand Prix twice.

Spence Pigot (Ed Carpenter Racing) for the first time managed to pass the first qualifying round of a road or urban event to finally qualify in ninth place behind Alexander Red (Andretti Autosport).

Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing), however, struggled as the four-time champion was eliminated in the first round. The New Zealander will only start from 18th row just ahead of Zachary Claman de Melo (Dale Coyne Racing), the replacement for Pietro Fittipaldi.

The Indianapolis GP will be broadcast this evening at 1 a.m. on Canal+.
