Robert Wickens wishes to clarify his remarks

Last Thursday in an Instagram post, Robert Wicken did not hide his current condition following his accident in Pocono, Pennsylvania earlier this year. The Canadian from Schmidt Peterson Motorsports continues his rehabilitation in a specialized center and is determined to regain the greatest possible mobility as quickly as possible.

The old pilot DTM wanted to clarify his statements and what could be the continuation of his physical development in the months to come. “There was no “announcement” to confirm that I was paralyzed, indicates Wickens on his Twitter account. I was paralyzed from the moment I hit the barriers at Pocono.

We were very clear that I had a spinal cord injury in the SPM release, but I think people are not aware of what that means and are speculating.

Being paralyzed and paraplegic corresponds to paralysis from the level of the injury to the lower parts. I follow him from my chest, my wound being at level T4.

A person may not be paraplegic for life. Because my spinal cord injury is “incomplete,” the nerves can find their way to my legs.

Incomplete means that the spinal cord has not been severed, but damaged. In a few months, the edema will decrease and we will know more about the degree of nerve regeneration.

Doctors told us that every spinal cord injury is different. Two people with the same injury may heal differently.

We can walk again or not. Every body heals differently. So we can't give a definitive answer on whether I will walk again. But I intend to do it.

The good news is that I already have more sensation and a little movement in my legs. So there is hope that over the course of 24 months I will regain enough movement to be able to walk again.

So far the signs are promising, but I'm trying not to move too fast. I keep my head down and work until my therapist and doctors tell me to stop. Thank you all for your support. And I hope this has brought some clarity to all of this. »

Robert Wickens had surgery following his accident to treat his spinal injury, as well as several fractures among his injuries sustained.
