Sébastien Bourdais: “I have no intention of ending my career”

On the occasion of the Indianapolis 500, AUTOhebdo was able to meet Sébastien Bourdais, injured on May 20 during Indy 500 testing, having undergone an operation for multiple pelvic fractures.

Have you had any major accidents during your career?

Yes, but I had never had any “breakage”, any physical after-effects. It always ended well. This is the first time that an accident has interrupted my season.

Do you think we need to review the safety of these single-seaters, particularly for side impacts?

If we can avoid pelvic fractures like the ones I suffered, that would be fantastic, but I don't think there are many people who can claim to have survived such a crash at 227mph (365 km). /h. Editor's note.) But I wasn't injured on my feet or anywhere else, so the car did its job.

Has the idea of ending your career ever crossed your mind?

No. It's my life. It's all I know how to do and all I want to do. I have no intention of letting this accident end my career.

Discover the interview with Sébastien Bourdais in full carried out by our special correspondent in issue 2116 of AUTOhebdo, available now in digital version on all platforms, and on newsstands from Wednesday.
