Tony Kanaan joins Chip Ganassi Racing for oval events

As in 2020, Tony Canaan will officiate on a partial program including the sleeves on ovals of the calendar of IndyCar Series. Except that the Brazilian, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 2013 and champion of the discipline in 2004, will change teams, moving from AJ Foyt Enterprises to Chip Ganassi Racing.

The native of Salvador de Bahia will thus take over from the legend of the Nascar, seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, who will drive the 13 road/urban events on the program for the next season.

Kanaan will return to a team frequented between 2014 and 2017 in IndyCar, with a victory at Fontana at the end of the first year. “It's difficult to express in words how excited I am about this announcement, Kanaan admits.

When Chip and I started talking about the opportunity to drive on the ovals and share the No. 48 with Jimmie Johnson, I couldn't imagine we would come to an agreement so quickly.

Chip Ganassi Racing is at the pinnacle of motorsport in North America and to be able to once again be a part of the program with such great drivers (including outgoing champion Scott Dixon) is a dream come true. »

Kanaan will therefore return to the track in competition from the double-round in Texas, the weekend of May 1st.
