Jack Aitken wins Monza sprint race

Jack aitken pockets a third victory this year in FIA F2, after dominating the Monza sprint race almost from start to finish this Sunday morning.

The Campos Racing driver had made a superb start at the start only to find himself alone in the lead when approaching the first chicane of the Lombard track. Behind the Briton, Jordan King (MP Motorsport) took the best place for second place over Giuliano Alesi (Trident).

In the regroup while braking for the chicane, Luca Ghiotto (Uni-Virtuosi) slightly damaged his front wing by hitting the rear of the car by Sergio Setta Camara (DAMS), before starting a duel with the championship leader Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) who took the advantage over the Italian one lap later to gain sixth place.

The positions then freeze until the 5th lap where Callum Ilott (Sauber Junior Team by Charouz) gets back on the provisional podium by overtaking Alesi.

On lap 7, King attacked and passed Aitken braking for the first chicane. The Campos Racing driver tries to respond at the second chicane but cannot regain his possession, going over the edge in the breakaway.

In the same sequence, Nyck de Vries tried to overtake Sergio Sette Camara at the first chicane but the Dutchman was hit by Luca Ghiotto, who saw his already damaged front wing come off. The Italian returned to the pits to change the element, while Sergio Sette Camara was forced to stop at the side of the track after a puncture.

The virtual safety car is put in place until the track is passable. On the restart on the 9th lap, Jack Aitken took first place from King. Two laps later, King tried his luck again at the second chicane. Aitken pulls straight on, when his rival cuts the chicane by going over the “banana” curbs.

Aitken retained the lead, but Callum Ilott took advantage of King's lost momentum to take second place. The positions hardly changed until the following laps, although Aitken was warned by a black and white flag, undoubtedly in an attempt to break the aspiration of Callum Ilott.

The latter, however, will lose everything at the start of the first chicane on the last lap, by locking his front left wheel and pulling straight ahead. The Sauber Junior Team driver was able to restart but ultimately saw his tire delaminate.

Aitken wins in the end ahead of King and Nyck de Vries, who benefits from a 5″ penalty on his race time for Nobuharu Matsushita (Carlin), winner yesterday, and sanctioned for not having respected the safety car procedure Virtual.

De Vries further widens the gap in the championship on Nicholas latifi (DAMS) (225 points against 166), before the Sochi final at the end of the month. Giuliano Alesi finished 7th behind Mick Schumacher (According to).
