Three years after the adoption of Halo in Formula 1 and in the European single-seater series, theIndyCar gets up to date. From the 2020 season, the Aeroscreen will be compulsory on each of the Dallaras entered.
This cockpit protection device was developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies. No wonder then thatit furiously recalls the device tested by the red bull brand in Formula 1 in 2016, except that it now seems to contain a Halo under the glass.
The Aeroscreen consists of a bulletproof glass surface made of polycarbonate, fixed around the cockpit by a titanium system. It must support a load equal to that of the Halo in F1, or 150 kiloNewtons. An anti-fog heater will be installed and an anti-reflective system so as not to dazzle the drivers.
During private testing conducted by Scott Dixon at the start of 2018, the Aeroscreen had given him satisfaction, but the heat given off by the large window had bothered him. « You need fresh air! said the four-time IndyCar champion. There is no air circulating in the cockpit. » To remedy this, Red Bull Advanced Technologies is currently working on this issue with chassis manufacturer Dallara.
Tests with IndyCar drivers will be conducted in the summer of 2019 before parts are delivered next fall.
