Hybridization confirmed in 2022

The IndyCar Series will be the next major international series to turn to hybridization by 2022. Championship officials car flagship in the United States will adopt the new generation propulsion mode in three years, “with a single source” as the system chosen.

This major upheaval follows the return to the universal aero kit in 2018, and the announcement of the arrival of the Aeroscreen for 2020, among the main technical modifications on the DW12 chassis.

The new engine architecture initially planned for 2021, will logically be postponed for 2022, to coincide with the arrival of the hybrid system which will include a multi-phase motor, an inverter and an electrical storage device generating energy recovery during braking phases.

Hybridization will allow the driver to start the car directly from the cockpit, and will work in symbiosis with the Chevrolet and Honda units, the two engine manufacturers currently involved in IndyCar.

The Push-to-Pass system will also benefit from the extra power allowed by hybridization. Another advantage mentioned by the American authorities, the possibility of quickly restarting the engine should reduce race neutralizations in the event of a car stopped on the track.

The IndyCar Series also hopes to attract a new engine manufacturer with the introduction of such technology.
