The first qualifying session of the Formula 2 took place without an audience, but with a spectacle. On the Austrian track of Red Bull Rings, Guanyu-Zhou (UNI-Virtuosi) scored the second pole of his career in the antechamber of the Formula 1 this Friday July 3.
The 21-year-old Chinese stood out from start to finish during the half-hour of testing. His comfortable margin over his direct pursuer, the surprising Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (MP Motorsport), attests to his ease: more than four tenths!
The British Callum Ilott (UNI-Virtuosi) will start from third place for the Long Race. He is ahead of beginner Christian Lundgaard (ART Grand Prix) and Mick Schumacher (Prema), the son of the seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher.
Among the outsiders to watch, Dams representative Daniel Ticktum set the ninth fastest time, ahead of the experienced Louis Delétraz (Charouz). The only Frenchman entered in Formula 2, Giuliano Alesi (HWA Racelab, 18th) did not have an easy time after a broken front wing during a curious driving maneuver:

A sign of the excitement of certain competitors, the red flag was waved five minutes from the end due to Marino Sato (Trident), guilty of a spin and an engine stall.
