Indy 500 crowns Castroneves

It is therefore Helio Castroneves the king. As a symbol, the driver, who started on pole, had to work hard to achieve this third victory on the Indiana ring. This winter, however, Helio was not doing well. At the heart of a resounding trial, accused of tax evasion, the Brazilian wanted to strike a big blow to sign his return to business. It's now done, after 3h20 of racing.

However, things did not start ideally for Castroneves. Starting from pole, he had to face a yellow flag at the first corner due to the accident between Mario Moraes and Marco Andretti. And, at the restart, he was surprised by Dario Franchitti, who had left to lead the first quarter of the race. The Scot was then dispossessed of first place by Ryan Briscoe, Castroneves' teammate. But the other driver of the Penske team did not take advantage of the situation for long, lacking grip. Especially since the neutralizations follow one another on the ring, with the accidents of Ryan Hunter-Reay, Graham Rahal, Robert Doornbos? And even the Frenchman Nelson Philippe is no exception. The Conquest Racing driver, who started in 32nd position, was having an honorable race until then. But a collision on the 131st lap doomed his hopes of finishing the 500 Miles.

Scott Dixon then thinks he's on the right track, he who has been leading the way since halfway. Winner in 2008, the New Zealander is on the verge of achieving the double. But that's without counting on the will of Castroneves, who returned to the front on the 142nd lap, never letting go of the lead until the final lap. After 3h20 of racing, Helio Castroneves finally got ahead of Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick. The Brazilian, after his successes in 2001 and 2002, achieved a historic hat-trick. No driver has managed to accumulate so many victories at the Indy 500 since Rick Mears, winner four times in 1979 and 1991.
