Lucas di Grassi: “The championship needs a new vision”

One of the most fervent defenders of the discipline, the Brazilian Lucas di Grassi expects a lot from the future of the 100% electric single-seater series, which will become the World Championship from 2021.

The 2016-2017 champion believes that those responsible for the championship must make strong decisions, Formula E already being one of the most innovative around alternative propulsion methods.

« The championship needs a new vision and follow it regardless of what the Formula 1, underlines di Grassi in the latest issue of AUTO, the official magazine of the FIA.

They have to be very aggressive in their strategy. A lot will depend on the technical decisions that Formula E makes. The championship still has a lot of room to develop, and the right path is one that maintains the balance between the opening of technical regulations and cost control.

You have to make a decision that creates value versus costs on the Research & Development side and also on the entertainment side. You increase interest, the level of drivers, the number of spectators, without increasing the cost, so you gain value. »

Wishing to see single-seaters with even improved acceleration, the Brazilian details the technical possibilities to be put in place.

“We can add four-wheel drive, or transfer the transmission that we have on the rear axle to the front axle and that will double the power, explains di Grassi. But this will only increase costs by 7% because you are duplicating a part that already exists. »

Formula E must face a certain mistrust from manufacturers involved since the beginning of the series, with the upcoming departures of Audi Sport and BMW.
