It's via the team Mercedes which McLaren will arrive in Formula E from the 2022/2023 season. The British team announced that it had reached an agreement to take over the German team which will leave the championship at the end of the current campaign. “ McLaren Racing is always looking to compete against the best and at the cutting edge, providing our fans, partners and people with new ways to be excited, entertained and inspired, explains Zak Brown the CEO of McLaren. I firmly believe that Formula E will give McLaren Racing a competitive advantage through a better understanding of electric vehicle racing, while providing a point of difference for our fans, partners and staff, and continuing to drive us on the path to sustainability. »

The McLaren team in Formula E next season will be made up of the current Mercedes team. An agreement has been reached between the two manufacturers but the acquisition must be finalized during the year. “ We are also pleased to be able to welcome the class-leading Formula E team that Mercedes has created and which will become an integral part of the McLaren Racing family.”, specifies Zak Brown.

Ian James, the director of the German team, will therefore remain in his post next season. “ Today's announcement confirms the next exciting chapter in the team's development, declares the Briton. Since our founding in 2019, performance, sustainability and adaptability have been the keys to our success. It's a great moment for all parties involved but, especially, for the people who make up this team. They are the ones who make his heart beat. Being able to continue working with them is what excites me the most. »

In January 2021, McLaren had already signed an agreement which offered it the possibility of entering the championship as one of the 12 teams authorized for the 2022/23 season, which marks the debut of the new generation of Formula E. No announcement has yet been made on a potential transfer of the two Mercedes drivers in Formula E to McLaren next season, Nyck de Vries, reigning champion, and Stoffel Vandoorne, 2nd in 2019.
