At least they're sure to have a place. McLaren, already present in Formula 1 and Indycar, is studying the possibility of engaging in Formula E or Endurance.
With this in mind, the British brand has signed an agreement which offers it the possibility of participating in the championship as one of the maximum 12 teams authorized for the 2022/23 season.
This will correspond to the entry into force of the third generation of cars. It will bring advances in performance and efficiency, including more powerful and lighter cars and faster charging.
McLaren is already the exclusive supplier of Gen2 batteries to Formula E under a four-season contract which ends at the end of the 2021/22 season, after which McLaren Racing will assess the potential for deepening its involvement in as a competitor in the electric championship.
“We have been watching Formula E closely for some time and monitoring the series' progress and future direction,” commented McLaren boss Zak Brown. “The opportunity to option an arrival and completion of the McLaren Applied supplier contract with the FIA at the end of Gen2, gives us the time needed to decide whether Formula E is suitable for McLaren as a future competition platform. . »
The contract does not commit McLaren to being part of the grid in season 9.
