Mercedes will enter Formula E but will abandon the DTM

Queen of F1 since the advent of the V6 turbo/hybrid Power Units era in 2014, Mercedes, in addition to the queen discipline of motorsport, will also turn its future towards Formula e from 2019-2020, sixth season of the championship featuring 100% electric single-seaters.

The German brand is following the example of its colleagues BMW et Audi, which will also be officially launched next year. « Mercedes-Benz will market future electric vehicles using the EQ label, comments Dr. Jens Thiemer, vice president of marketing at Mercedes-Benz.

“In motorsport as in all other areas, we want to be the benchmark in the premium segment and explore new innovative projects, explains for his part Toto wolff, boss of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport.

The combination of Formula 1 and Formula e offers this. Formula e is like an exciting start-up: it offers a new format, combining racing with a specific format, in order to promote current and future technologies.

Electrification is coming to the production car world and Formula E offers manufacturers an exciting platform to bring this technology to a new audience. She does it with a whole new type of racing, different from any other series. I am delighted that we can push back our entry by a year to the 2019/20 season. The end of an era

The announcement of Mercedes' arrival in Formula E, however, coincides with program termination DTM at the end of 2018. A pillar of the championship since its beginnings, with uninterrupted commitment since 2000 and the renewal of the series, the star firm has accumulated ten Drivers' titles, thirteen Teams and six in the Manufacturers' championship, as well as 183 victories. The departure of the brand sounds like a hard blow for the series in which Audi and BMW are involved.

« Our years in DTM will always be seen as a major chapter in Mercedes motorsport history, explains Toto Wolff. I would like to thank all the team members whose fantastic work has helped make Mercedes-Benz the most successful manufacturer in the DTM during this period.

While it's a tough start for all of us, we're going to do everything we can this season and next to make sure we win as many titles as possible. We owe it to our fans and to ourselves. »
