Mick Schumacher unlocks his counter

At least he will no longer be criticized for not having won a race this season. Winner of the “feature race” of the Monza round this Saturday, Mick Schumacher (Prema) won his first race of this 2020 campaign. The German beat Luca Ghiotto (Hitech) and Christian Lundgaard (ART Grand Prix) at Monza on the grounds of Ferrari, and took the opportunity to make a big comeback in the championship.

The son of the Red Baron used the same recipe as usual: a supersonic start, from sixth place, which allowed him to take 2nd place from the first corner, behind pole sitter Callum Ilott (UNI-Virtuosi) . It was finally on the 12th lap that the race was decided, during Ilott’s pit stop. The Briton, when restarting, stalled in the pit lane, and lost a good fifteen seconds.

But with his breakneck pace, Ilott was able to move up to 6th, lapping a second faster than everyone else over the last ten laps. Starting from 15th place, Robert Shwartzman (Prema), the championship leader, thought he would take 8th place, which would mean pole position for the sprint race. But he was dispossessed in the penultimate lap. It is Louis Deletraz (Charouz) who will start in front on Sunday. In the championship, Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman are tied (134 points) in the lead, but the two men see Mick Schumacher fall back to just three points!

In good shape for several weekends, Nikita mazepin finished 22nd, after being pushed off the track by Roy Nissany (Trident) and suffering a technical problem. The other man in good shape of the moment Yuki tsunoda finished just off the podium, despite starting on the front row.
