Nyck de Vries takes pole in Monaco

Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) took pole position for the FIA main race F2, after dominating a session with a somewhat unusual format in the Principality of Monaco.

The session was in fact divided into two groups to better regulate traffic on the track on the tortuous Monegasque track, with the cars flanked by an odd number going first, the even numbers moving in the second group.

Callum Ilott (Sauber Junior Team by Charouz) initially showed himself to be the fastest in the initial group by setting a benchmark lap in 1’21″462, seven thousandths ahead Mick Schumacher (Prema Racing) who waited for his very last attempt to move up the hierarchy.

Anthoine Hubert (Trident) ranks fourth in this first group on the track, 213 thousandths behind Ilott. But it is the second group that will prove to be the fastest.

On an improving track and at the end of his second attempt, Nyck de Vries took the advantage for the first time in 1’21″159 before lowering his benchmark immediately to 1’20″676.

The Dutchman will therefore start from pole position tomorrow for the main race alongside Callum Ilott. Luca Ghiotto (Uni-Virtuosi) and Mick Schumacher will share the second row. Sergio Sette Camara (DAMS), Sean Gelael (Prema) and Anthoine Hubert will follow.

Qualified fifth, the Canadian Nicholas latifi (DAMS), championship leader, will however have to observe a penalty of three places on the grid for having crossed the white line at the exit of the pit lane at the end of free practice, even though the red light was on, and will therefore start eighth.

Disappointment for Dorian Boccolacci (Campos Racing), who made a mistake leaving the pool, damaging the right side of his car. The Frenchman will start from 13th place, Giuliano Alesi (Trident) will start 17th.
