Oscar Piastri wins his first F2 pole

We promise, we won't bother him anymore with his supposed weakness in qualifying. The Australian rookie indeed signed his first pole position in Formula 2 this Friday at Silverstone, for the fourth round of the season. The Prema driver overtook the championship leader Guanyu-Zhou (UNI-Virtuosi/+0”221) and the surprising Dutchman Richard Verschoor (MP Motorsport/+0”405).

While he did not sign the slightest pole last year in Formula 3 despite winning the title at the end of the season, Mark Webber's protégé seemed relieved when parking his car. “Whoa! It’s been a long time since I’ve been on pole.” he blurted out.

Excellent performance of Theo Pourchaire

Already second in free practice in the morning, Piastres got underway very quickly in qualifying, setting his pole time on the first set of tires, half a second ahead of the competition. On the second train, only Zhou and Verschoor managed to get close, but not close enough to pick up the Melbourne native.

For his part, Théo Pourchaire (ART Grand Prix) took an honorable 5th place (+0”565) considering the conditions. As a reminder, the Habs have not yet fully recovered from the cracked radius of his left arm which he suffered in Baku several weeks ago.

The Frenchman was not helped either by his early exit from the track in free practice, but was able to secure an ultra-solid fifth time this Friday evening in qualifying. His teammate Christian Lundgaard (ART Grand Prix), 10th, will start from pole this Saturday morning in Race 1 ahead of his friend Jüri Vips (Hitech).
