No more doubleheaders and a 3rd race at Indianapolis for IndyCar

The Coronavirus crisis is not sparing the United States. And like all other championships, theIndyCar had to resolve to review his calendar.

The first news concerns the cancellation of the Detroit Grand Prix (May 30-31), which also affects IMSA. To compensate for these postponements and cancellations, two events will be transformed into doubleheaders and a third race will be organized at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Enough to bring the total number of races to 15, one more than what was announced on March 26.

« We are disappointed not to ride in Detroit, underlines Mark Miles, president of Penske Entertainment Corp. But we are already looking forward to returning to Belle Isle in 2021. However, we are determined to offer fans as much action on the track as possible. The crisis situation induced by covid-10 is a challenge for everyone and we have therefore put in place contingency plans that will allow us to prepare for any eventuality. Our goal is to maintain our competition as much as possible while prioritizing the health and safety of our competitors and spectators. »

The two rounds scheduled at Iowa Speedway and Laguna Seca Raceway therefore become doubleheaders. The first city will therefore offer a race on Friday July 17 and another the next day, the second an event on Saturday September 19 and another on the 20th.

But the major news is the organization of a third event on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a second on the Indianapolis Road Course: the IndyCar Harvest GP, scheduled for October 3, the day before the 8 Hours of 'Indianapolis, fourth and penultimate meeting of the Intercontinental GT Challenge. As a reminder, the Indy GP is scheduled to be held on July 4 and the 104th edition of the Indianapolis 500 on August 23.
