First success in Formula E for Günther in Chile, Vergne gives up

In motorsport, the adage has become a cliché: nothing is over until the checkered flag is waved. The third edition of the Santiago de Chile ePrix demonstrated this once again, with a final change of driver in the lead just three turns from the end.

In the running to win the event after an effective comeback, Antonio Félix Da Costa (DS Techeetah) surrendered in a suspenseful finish against Maximilian Günther (BMW i Andretti). The young German had previously taken control after 20 minutes of effort via an overtake on Mitch Evans (Jaguar).

For Maximilian Günther, recruited by BMW after a few very discreet ePrixes in 2018-19, this first success in the electrical discipline is proof of his talent. Struggling with the temperature of his battery, Antonio Félix Da Costa settled for second place, ahead of pole sitter Mitch Evans.

At DS Techeetah, this podium will not be enough to mask the disappointment in Jean-Éric Vergne's entourage. The Frenchman, double outgoing champion, retired following a damaged front wing and a cut tire. ''JEV'', who started 11th, was in contention for victory during his incident.

Very fast during practice, with a presence in Super Pole, the Venturi of Felipe Massa and Edoardo Mortara gradually disappeared from the leading group, just like Oliver Turvey (NIO). Former champion Lucas di Grassi (Audi), handicapped by a position at the back of the grid, made the best comeback of the day with seventh final position.

The race will quickly be forgotten for Porsche. The German team, after a promising start in Saudi Arabia, was dismissed in complete anonymity. Neel Jani only completed a few hectometers while Andre Lotterer had a loss of power (22nd).

Arrived in Chile as championship leader, Alexander sims (BMW i Andretti) retired after a mechanical problem. He logically gives up his place in the general classification to Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes).

Finally, several penalties for non-compliance with a technical rule were applied to three competitors including Sébastien Buemi (Nissan e.dams). The Swiss loses the benefit of his 10th place.
