After only one season of experimentation, the new weekend format in F2 and F3 will be abandoned at the end of the year. This was jointly announced by Bruno Michel, the promoter of F2 and F3, along with Stefano Domenicali, the boss of the F1, on the sidelines of the Russian Grand Prix this Friday, September 24. From the 2022 season, the two flagship series of the pyramid of promotional formulas will therefore partially return to the old format, with two races per weekend.
The main race will take place on Sunday
« In 2021 we introduced a new race weekend format, and decided to run F2 and F3 separately, mainly for cost reasons, which has proven to be very effective, says Bruno Michel, boss of F2 and F3, before explaining the reasons for this choice. However, although on a sporting level this new format worked well, we understood that there was too much time between each event, which was not ideal for the teams, drivers and fans. Meanwhile, stakeholders have expressed interest in F1, F2 and F3 racing together again ».
The decision was therefore made to run F2 and F3 on the same weekends “as often as possible”, which means that this will not be the case systematically. More information will be given in October when the Formula 1 calendar is officially revealed. This return to the old format, however, involves some modifications regarding the weekend format which prevailed until 2020. The main race will in fact take place on Sundays, as a curtain-raiser to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. , and will be preceded by a single sprint race, the reverse grid of which will now result from the result of qualifying (Top 10 for F2 and Top 12 for F3).

It's not by changing the format every year that they're going to make these series popular... What about the W-Series? Already in the trash?
