Surprise in Barcelona, Matsushita wins the main race

No one saw this one coming. Not even Nobuharu Matsushita (MP Motorsport) and his great experience in the category. Starting in 18th position, the Japanese won after an incredible combination of circumstances. He beat Robert Shwartzman (Prema) and Nikita mazepin (Pug).

However, the race had started in a fairly traditional way in recent weeks in F2. Championship leader and polesitter Callum Ilott (UNI-Virtuosi) managed his tires perfectly and even re-established himself in the lead on the 24th lap, taking control of the race from Nikita Mazepin (Hitech) who had not even stopped.

But on the 25th lap, a safety car completely disrupted the race, after a collision between Giuliano Alesi and Sean Gelael. Callum Ilott, who was flying towards victory, took the opportunity to dive back into the pits and put on new soft tires, leaving the lead of the race at one Yuki tsunoda in used tires.

At the restart, the Japanese blocked everyone, which created nervousness in the peloton and attacks from all sides. Nobuharu Matsushita, who found himself there after diving into the pits at the right time, attacked Ilott for 2nd place, then Tsunoda and his worn tires. With three laps remaining, the Japanese got a boost from Roy Nissany (Trident), who got out and caused another safety car.

The wild animals were then released for a single round. And that’s how Matsushita almost didn’t have to defend his first victory of the season. The big loser of the day is none other than 2nd in the championship Christian Lundgaard (ART Grand Prix), 11th, who scores no points. Luca Ghiotto (Hitech) will start on pole on Sunday, ahead of Felipe Drugovich (MP Motorsport).
