What if Callum Ilott was simply getting his hands on the championship? A week after taking control, the Briton signed his third pole position of the season – the second in a row – in Barcelona this Friday. The UNI-Virtuosi driver beat Robert Shwartzman (Prema), finally competitive on a fast lap, and his teammate Guanyu-Zhou (UNI-Virtuosi).
The member of the Ferrari Driver Academy took pole while everyone was still in the pits between the first and second stints of fast laps. It was at the edge of the low wall, getting out of his car, that he knew he had won his 4th pole in the category.
The two favorites for the championship will therefore start side by side on Saturday during the main race. They must have reveled in the poor qualification of their common rival, the Dane Christian Lundgaard. The ART Grand Prix driver will only start from 14th position. Still on the French side, DAMS placed Dan Ticktum in 8th place.
Winner of the sprint race last week, Yuki tsunoda (Carlin) will start 6th, just behind Mick Schumacher but ahead of Jack Aitken (Campos). Giuliano Alesi (HWA Racelab) finished 21st in the session and will start far down the grid this Saturday.
