Quartararo: “Find the right balance between “no penalty” and “penalty””

Here we go again ! After five weeks of break, some of the protagonists of the MotoGPIncluding fabio quartararo, met on Thursday for the traditional press conference ahead of the British GP, 12e calendar stopover.

For the Yamaha rider, who has a 21-length lead overall, nothing will change in his approach to this meeting despite the fact that he will have to do a Long Lap. “Five weeks was quite a long time,” underlines the world champion. But I'm glad to be back. We will approach this race like a normal weekend. There will of course be that penalty, but let's see how this weekend goes and how we approach the race. I think it will be a big challenge for us. I feel ready to run. »

Quartararo won his fifth — and final — victory of 2021 at Silverstone; a performance that the Nice native says he is ready to repeat. “In Moto3 and Moto2, I have never been fast on this circuit,” he explains. But during my rookie season, it was the first time I felt like I could fight for victory even before starting the race. After the start, at the first turn, I fell. Last year I was able to fight for victory. It's a rather technical circuit, especially the first sector, but with a MotoGP I've always been very fast there. Let's see how it goes this year, but I don't think there's any reason to be slow. »

“For me, this is the main thing to not make our sport boring”

After the announcement of this Long Lap, Quartararo as well as Lin Jarvis, managing director of Yamaha Motor Racing, did not hide their dissatisfaction. Other similar incidents took place during the season and these did not result in sanctions. It is this “double standard” that the Frenchman is trying to put forward. “I don't want to say anything about the previous crashes because there were no penalties (Nakagami in Barcelona, Miller in Portugal or Bagnaia in Lusail, editor's note). Of course, after the fall in Barcelona which was massive, I understand that they want to change the rules a little to be more aggressive. But I think they need to find the balance between irresponsible driving and racing incidents. Of course, I'm aware that Aleix could have had a better result, but I don't see that as a penalty. They have to find that balance between no penalty and penalty. For me, this is the main thing to not make our sport boring. »

A test with Mercedes future ?

Quartararo is a great enthusiast of F1. He has gone to a test several times and frequents Lewis Hamilton like just yesterday during a jetsurfing session. As Valentino Rossi a few years ago in Valencia, Quartararo would also like to try F1 for the Mercedes team. “It’s something I’m working on, but it’s not something planned at the moment,” he confides. Of course, that would be something I would like to try. I've been in the simulator, I've been in the car, but I haven't had a chance to try it. »
