Après l’annonce par M-Sport de la signature de Fergus Greensmith pour l’ensemble de la saison 2022, les effectifs dans les trois équipes exploitant des Rally1 sont quasiment complets (reste la situation d’Adrien fourmaux to clarify). This means that there are no more Rally1 seats available. With such a limited market, many drivers had no choice but to fall back on WRC2 to continue to compete in the World Cup. Next year, the regulations should change and group all competitors with a Rally2 into a single championship, whereas there were two until now.

Titled in 2021, Andreas Mikkelsen will be lined up in Monte-Carlo in a Skoda Fabia from the Toksport team, but the Norwegian has not yet decided whether he will play the entire season. His compatriot, Mads Ostberg, on the contrary, affirmed at Monza that he was on the verge of finalizing his participation without revealing with which manufacturer. Also present in Italy, Teemu Suninen was confident of the possibility of seeing him in WRC2 from the beginning of January at the wheel of an i20 Rally2. Andrea Adamo, who wishes to rely on experienced drivers to demonstrate the potential of his cars, explained that discussions were well advanced with Suninen. Another Finn is also considering this possibility, but under M-Sport colors.

Winner in WRC2 at Monza, Jari Huttunen said he was very interested in this solution, but agreed that there was still work to achieve such a program. As Citroën Racing's project is to field Yohan Rossel in this category in 2022, the latter will face formidable adversity if the candidacies of these four Nordics are confirmed.
