77 crews at the Tour de Corse
Return to calendar WRC last year, with a specific format comprising only nine special stages with more than substantial mileage, the Tour de Corse 2016 will offer a revised route to the 77 crews with ten SS for a total of more than 390 km against the clock.
Twelve WRCs will be at the start with the usual headliners from Volkswagen Motorsport Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen, who will find on their way the Hyundai i20 trio Neuville-Sordo-Paddon.
Abu Dhabi Team WRT will field two DS3 WRCs for Kris Meeke and Craig Breen (who replaces Stéphane Lefebvre, still convalescing), while the Ford clan will be able to count on the Fiesta RS of the Team M-Sport by Eric Camilli and Mads Ostberg, supported by copies of Ott Tänak and Lorenzo Bertelli, who will make his return to the World Cup after his accident in Finland.
In the WRC-2 category, Elfyn Evans (Ford Fiesta R5), who placed second last year with the Ford Fiesta RS WRC M-Sport, will be one of the favorites with the Skoda Fabia R5 of Jan Kopecky.
The French clan will be particularly well represented in Corsica since in addition to the expected presence of Bryan Bouffier (Citroën DS3 R5), Julien Maurin (Skoda Fabia R5), Pierre-Louis Loubet (Citroën DS3 R5), Quentin Gilbert (Citroën DS3 R5) or Quentin Giordano (Peugeot 208 T16 R5), Stéphane Sarrazin will drive a Hyundai i20 R5, while Sylvain Michel, just crowned French Rally Champion, will showcase his crown in a Skoda Fabia R5, and will receive the support of the French FFSA Team.
Impossible not to mention the presence of a former winner of the event in the person of François Delecour. The winner of the 1993 edition (with the Ford Escort RS Cosworth) will be entered in a Skoda Fabia R5 from Team FJ. Note also the presence of Kevin Abbring and Fabio Andolfi in Hyundai i20 R5s.
We can only hope that the weather this time will be more favorable than last year, when torrential rains forced the organizers to cancel the Casamozza – Ponte Leccia special.
