A confectionery wholesaler in Aix-en-Provence, he met his Marseillais friend Jean-Pierre Nicolas at Ecurie Mistral. The two young people had practically started together, obtaining their first official car, an R8 Gordini, at the 1965 Coupe des Alpes. Winners of the Tour de Madeira, the Critérium Jean Behra and Group 2 at the Tour de Corse in 1967, still on R8G, they had integrated Alpine in 1968.
That year, the two friends also distinguished themselves on R8 Gordini, at Monte-Carlo, then at Neige et Glace (2nd overall and 1st Group 1). In 1969, they finished 2nd in the Rally Mediterranean then the following year, were the best representatives Alpine au Monte-Carlo, héroïques 3e derrière les intouchables Porsche 911 S.
Seriously injured on the road on his return from the Morocco Rally, Claude had to take a break before reuniting with Nicolas, winning the 1971 Rallye Pétrole-Provence, the 1973 Tour de la Réunion and the 1973 Neige et Glace, the latter on R12 Gordini .
