In Quarantine with AUTOhebdo – Kankkunen’s successes with Peugeot in video

When you think of Juha Kankkunen, several cars from rally mythical, such as the Peugeot 205 T16 from Group B, aboard which the Finn won the World Cup in 1986. Enough chatter, here is the summary of this season, 1h30 of monsters on the snow of Monte-Carlo, the ice of Sweden, or the Safari from Kenya!

“KKK” means victories in spades in WRC (23 for 4 titles to be precise), but also a rally-raid excursion. Indeed, the Nordic was there when Peugeot launched an attack on the Paris-Dakar with its 205 Grand Raid. The model was taken from Group B, while extending the wheelbase in order to accommodate a large fuel tank.

The 1988 edition of the most famous rally-raid was an opportunity for Juha Kankkunen to enter the legend of African adventure by winning the event on his first participation, notably to the detriment of his teammate Henri Pescarolo!

The 1988 vintage remains engraved in memories for the incredible affair of Ari Vatanen's stolen Peugeot 405 T16. Find this sequence as well as the best moments of this edition in a summary of more than an hour:

Finally, our hero of the day also distinguished himself on the ice. No, not that of Andros Trophy, but on 70 cm of ice in the heart of the Baltic Sea in Finland. Twice, in 2007 and then in 2011, the retiree took the wheel of a Bentley Continental to set the speed record on this surface.

After a peak at “only” 321,6 km/h, his second performance allowed him to reach 330 km/h, aboard a luxurious GT but equipped with studded Pirelli tires and bioethanol fuel (performance since beaten by Janne Laitinen an Audi RS6 with 335 km/h).
