Evans and his title chances: “Not many opportunities to win”

Second in the World Rally Championship (WRC) après trois épreuves en 2020, Elfyn Evans (Toyota) a accordé une interview à AUTOhebdo, to be found in full in issue 2272 (available digitally). The Welshman had never performed so well at the start of the season. It is not a judgment, but an observation that the person concerned makes!

« Never before have I had such a start to a campaign. It's a situation that I appreciate, but in the past, I have already distinguished myself behind the wheel of the Ford. Unfortunately, with the problems that arose with my back after the incident in Estonia (upon receiving a bump when rally from Estonia, Elfyn had injured his backs and missed Finland, Germany and Turkey in 2019. Editor’s note), I was not able to capitalize on my good performances. »

The vwinner of the last rally in Sweden s’est très vite adapté à la Yaris WRC, après une aventure de trois ans avec la Ford Fiesta du team M-Sport. “From the start of our collaboration with the Toyota Gazoo Racing team, they did everything to put us in the best conditions, in particular putting us in a position to drive the Yaris as often as possible and this ensured us very good preparation for this season, He explains.

During our very first miles with the car, I instantly felt confident behind the controls. The excellent feeling I felt gave me the necessary assets to be competitive. This mainly comes from the car, because I'm not the only one.

The performances of Kalle Rovanperä, who nevertheless lacked experience in a WRC, confirm that the Yaris is a machine that allows you to quickly express yourself behind the wheel. »

At present, Elfyn Evans does not wish to project herself into the fight for the title. Before the Estonian rally (September 4-6), however, it only counts eight points behind the leader (and teammate) Sébastien Ogier

“Honestly, I don’t think about that. Considering how the WRC is going this year (almost six month break. Editor’s note), it’s better to make appointments one after the other and see where it takes us.

It is true that in the event of poor performance, the chances of doing well at the end of the year will diminish. It will be difficult to compensate for a bad result but, on the other hand, there will not be many opportunities to win, so we will have to try to seize them. »
