Hirvonen wins in a breathtaking finale

The Finn Mikko Hirvonen signs his second consecutive success in Poland in WRC after his victory in Greece a fortnight ago. But the finale was marked by the incredible crash of Jari-Matti Latvala in the Super Special! Over the 2,5 kilometers of the circuit laid out in the Mikolajki service park, the Finn went wide in a curve and damaged the left front suspension of his Focus. This was the final special of the rally which did not present any particular difficulty.

With this result, Hirvonen climbs to the top of the general Drivers classification with 58 points, just ahead of Frenchman Sébastien Loeb.

The Ford drivers, in the lead on the evening of the first stage, managed to repel the attacks of their main opponent, Dani Sordo, throughout the last two days until the last Super Special. Sordo, the driver of the Citroën Racing team, finally took second place ahead of Henning Solberg, lucky third.

Until then, Sunday had been fairly calm. The only notable event was the abandonment of Sébastien Ogier in SS16. While racing for fourth place, the Citroën Junior Team driver stopped on the side of the track with an engine problem. This mishap brought happiness to the Solberg brothers, first and foremost Henning, who regained a position ahead of his brother Petter.

As for Sébastien Loeb, the now ex-leader of the championship, forced to retire on Friday and restarted in the SupeRallye on Saturday, he is taking advantage of the voluntary decline of the Citroën Junior Team drivers, Evgeny Novikov and Conrad Rautenbach, as well as the rebound of the Super Special to limit breakage.
