Hyundai unveils its 20 i2017 Coupe WRC

The New Generation i20 seen this season in WRC leaves room for his little sister i20 Coupe WRC, meeting the new technical regulations introduced in the World Championship from 2017 and presented this Thursday on the sidelines of the Monza Rally Show in Monza.

From its little sister, we can only keep the name, since under the new rules, the i20 Coupé WRC appears visually much more aggressive than its predecessor, with numerous aerodynamic appendages, such as the famous winglets. DTM on the front shield.

“This is the biggest rule change in a long time, admits Team Principal Michel Nandan. It’s an interesting technical challenge that we took on with enthusiasm. We want to demonstrate our ability to compete in the championship next season and we are confident that the i20 Coupe WRC will help us achieve this. »

« Quand j’ai fait les premiers essais avec la Hyundai i20 Coupé WRC, j’ai été époustouflé par la vitesse de la voiture, underlines Dani Sordo. The increased engine power and better grip thanks to aerodynamics are impressive. »

Alongside the Spaniard, Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon will spearhead Hyundai’s commitment to the WRC and will line up under the same banner of the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team.

In fact, from Rally Monte Carlo next January, manufacturers will be able to field up to three cars per rally, with the top two from each team scoring championship points.

“I have high hopes for our new Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, which is the result of a lot of work from everyone on the team, comments Thierry Neuville. We had a very positive 2016 season and I am very happy to have finished the season in second place. We want to be in a strong position to fight for the title in 2017.”

If the performance and the possibility of the world title remain in the minds of the Belgian, his New Zealand teammate Paddon hopes to be more consistent throughout the championship, and intends to increase his capital of victories in 2017. But without forgetting the show.

“The Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC is exciting to drive and I think it will be more exciting for spectators too, says the Kiwi. The new regulations will make the sport even more interesting and attract a whole new generation of motorsport fans. »
