This scenario seems so inevitable, that the question is not “if” Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota) can become world rally champion (WRC) 2022, but to know “when” the Finn can win the crown. It turns out that this is possible from the Rally from New Zealand (Auckland, September 29 – October 2)!

The young 21-year-old driving ace has a nice margin of 53 points over his direct pursuer, the 2019 champion. Ott Tänak (Hyundai) and 76 on the regular of the places of honor, Thierry Neuville (Hyundai). On the gravelly stages of New Zealand, the son of Harri Rovanperä can definitely secure the title, but several circumstances must be in his favor. The spearhead of Toyota Gazoo Racing is still dependent on the results of its rivals.

Rovanperä must score 8 points more than Tänak…

After New Zealand, there will only be two meetings left to play this year (Spain and Japan). With each WRC event earning a maximum of 30 points (25 for the winner + 5 for the Power Stage victory), Kalle Rovanperä could no longer be caught if he is 61 points ahead of his runner-up on the evening of the last special on Sunday . To simplify, the Finn must score 8 points more than Ott Tänak to be world champion and he must not concede more than 15 points to Thierry Neuville.

The most advantageous scenario for Kalle Rovanperä concerns a victory in New Zealand accompanied by the Power Stage. In the event of a victory increased by 5 points, the Toyota driver would be directly crowned champion. In the event that Kalle Rovanperä does not obtain the maximum score in Auckland, then we will have to get out the calculators. If we analyze the opponents' side, Ott Tänak will need to score at least 23 points to be sure to push the joy of the title to Spain in the Toyota clan, regardless of the result of the young Finnish prodigy.
