At first glance, Estonia and Finland are the same, two rallies on which la Toyota Yaris is dominatrice. Elfyn Evans a été le premier à se mettre en exergue avec cinq meilleurs temps consécutifs… puis Rovanperä est entré en action. Certains se demandent d’ailleurs pourquoi faire deux courses aussi similaires à 500 km de distance. Des différences existent cependant. Dans la région de la petite ville de Tartu (180 km au sud-est de Tallinn, la capitale), les organisateurs ont sélectionné des routes très étroites qui se révèlent extrêmement techniques à négocier avec des Rally1 prenant toute la place et embarquant un boost qui, lorsqu’il se déclenche, impose de bien choisir sa ligne pour ne pas finir dans les arbres. Kalle Rovanpera's victories are impressive, especially given his youth in a discipline where knowledge of the terrain and experience are important. But they also illustrate the lack of competitors in the WRC: only two teams, four drivers at most, truly candidates for the title. Isn't the rally a victim of its retrograde, conservative approach, its inability to anticipate the end of the thermal?
