Kris Meeke: “The priority is to please myself”

Still in full preparation for the first two rounds of the WRC 2019, at Rally Monte-Carlo (January 24-27) then Sweden in February, Toyota Gazoo Racing will enter the season in the position of title holder among the Manufacturers, and with the firm intention of at least retaining its crown.

For this, the entity led by Tommu Mäkinen took the gamble of recruiting Chris Meeke, ousted by Citroën Racing during the 2018 season, after several exits. The Briton, who will join Ott Tänak and Jari-Matti Latvala, knows that all eyes will be on him from the first stage of Monte-Carlo, but wants to relieve the pressure by not setting any real quantified objective at the start of the campaign.

« The priority is to please myself, Meeke says. I realized in my short time away from the sport that over the last couple of years, maybe I hadn't enjoyed things as much as I should have. It's one of the best jobs in the world!

And driving one of these new WRCs on some special stages should be the greatest fun you can have. I've already experienced this: in 2016 or 2015, I had really good results, and if I can have fun, I think everything will fall into place. The pleasure of driving the Yaris WRC is there. I did a few tests in Finland, and now on asphalt, and the feeling is good. We have to keep learning, be patient, and let's see where it takes us. »

Kris Meeke will return to a round in the Principality where he took 3rd place in 2014, finishing 4th last year.
