FIA launches new calls for tenders on sustainable energy in WRC

Le World Rally Championship WRC must be the last of the major FIA championships to move to the hybrid era by 2022, if the schedule imagined by the federation and the promoter remains maintained.

In addition to this revolution, the discipline also aims to integrate as best as possible sustainable energies in its mode of operation, in particular fuels. With this in mind, the FIA has just unveiled a call for tenders covering three essential points to support the transition to the hybridization of Rally1s.

1. Sustainable fuel: the supplier produces and delivers a fuel, or a range of fuels, which can be used by competitors in the different classes of the Championship.

Can thus be presented a 100% sustainable fuel specification that can be used by all vehicle classes at a reasonable cost, or multiple fuel specifications for each vehicle category/class depending on the technical requirement, percentage of sustainable element and relevant cost for each category / class.

Point which can represent approximately 150 to 000 liters of fuel per year, not counting the 180 liters used for testing. The goal is to achieve a 000% sustainable fuel by 50 at the latest.

2. Marking of electrical terminals for plug-in hybrid cars.

3. Production and supply of renewable energy to cover the charging needs of Rally1 cars and general electricity needs of the service fleet.

“Given the rapid evolution of the sustainable and alternative fuels sector, the FIA intends to take this opportunity to work with potential bidders and highlight the wide range of possibilities offered in this constantly changing area. » says the governing body of international motorsport.

An applicant can submit an offer for just one of the three points or all of them, with this scenario offering the opportunity to obtain the title of “Official Energy Partner” of the WRC.

The call for tenders covers the period 2022-2024, applications must be submitted no later than January 29, 2021, with selection taking place no later than the end of March 2021.
