The International Automobile Federation (FIA) made things clear on Tuesday April 27 regarding the near future of the World Rally Championship (WRC). Rumor was starting to circulate in the industry regarding delays in the development of the hybrid system, which must be fitted to Toyota, Hyundai and Ford from 2022.
Yves Matton, FIA Rally Director, is reassuring, but recognizes that time is running out: “The Rally1 hybrid project represents a fantastic step forward for the discipline and highlights the FIA’s commitment to sustainable development and technological progress. The development of a new product inevitably generates challenges.
In the current testing phase, the collaboration between the FIA, the manufacturers and our technical partner is very strong. We all work closely together to carry out the tasks inherent in a development cycle of this nature. Currently we operate under a accelerated process due to delivery delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic but eight months before the start of the 2022 season, we are on schedule. »
