Often used as a development field by manufacturers, the national championships are used to welcoming the mounts of the WRC. These last years, Toyota et Hyundai for example did not hesitate to participate in national events to collect data with their Rally1 in order to develop them more easily.
With the arrival of the all-new hybrid era, M-Sport could have done the same this year to accelerate the development process of its Puma Rally1. An idea discussed within the English ranks but to which no follow-up has yet been given.
« There are probably some benefits to riding in nationals, but my personal opinion is that a national event is nice to get some riding time, initially launches team manager Richard Millener before giving more details.
It is difficult to do real testing or work on appropriate settings during these events since the stages come one after the other quickly. Furthermore, no matter what you tell the drivers, they will compare times and will always be more competitive than in practice. There are occasions when it will make sense to consider a rally national, but I think we will only consider tests (private) for the time being."
National rally fans and competitors are warned, there won't be a Puma Rally1 for a while. M-Sport for its part will continue to develop it with tests authorized by the FIA.
