A new calendar for the WRC in 2023. Long-awaited, it was unveiled this Friday by the World Rally Championship. A calendar with 13 dates, like in 2022, but with several changes. Feedback… but also innovations.

As announced by AUTOhebdo for several weeks, exit rally of Ypres, the Rally of Catalonia and the Rally of New Zealand. In this new post-Covid period, the WRC wants to become more international, which translates into two dates in Latin America and two returns: the Rally of Mexico (March 16 – 19) and the Chile Rally (September 28 – October 1) find a place among the 13 WRC events of the year. Mexico hosted the last WRC event before national lockdowns in March 2020, then was absent from the calendar in 2021 and 2022. Chile has only had one edition in the world championship, in 2019 with victory ofOtt Tänak.

A new Central European Rally in WRC

The WRC will above all innovate by offering a Central European Rally, which will take place in three countries: Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany, from October 26 to 29. The asphalt rally will be based in the southeastern German city of Passau. On the other hand, despite numerous discussions, there will be no rally in Saudi Arabia next year.

“We were absolutely determined to ensure that the WRC calendar returned to what it was pre-Covid, with a good spread of events inside and outside Europe,” he said. said Simon Larkin, WRC Senior Events Director. Demand has been very high for the limited number of locations on the calendar, but we are happy with the range and variety of events we have. They will provide a great sporting challenge for competitors, while offering the most high-profile events in each country. »

Beyond the new features, as usual we will find the Monte-Carlo Rally (January 19 – 22) in the opening round, followed by the Sweden Rally (February 9 – 12) on snow-covered roads. As in 2022, Rally Japan will close the 2023 campaign, from November 16 to 19.
