Terrible blow for Tänak at Wales Rally GB

Title chancesOtt Tänak took a serious blow on SS16 of Wales Rally GB, on the second pass of Sweet Lamb Hafren.

While he was more than 40 seconds ahead of Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport), Ott Tänak retired following a mechanical problem. The Estonian immediately stopped his Yaris WRC in order to preserve its engine. Speculation suggests a shock for the former leader at the finish of the previous special.

“We don't know what broke, perhaps a jump which damaged the radiator since the protection broke and pierced the latter, explained Tommi Mäkinen, Team Principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC. It couldn't be more disappointing. He was so strong in those stages. His teammates know what to do at the constructors' championship level. We really feel sorry for Ott because it's getting really tough for his title chances. »

Ott Tänak will possibly have the opportunity to aim for bonus points in the Power Stage this Sunday. The Estonian is 13 points behind the Championship leader Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), 8th after his exit this morning, but who should take advantage of the team instructions to gain two positions since his teammates Andreas Mikkelsen and Hayden Paddon are in front of him.
