The number 43 retired in WRC this season, in tribute to Ken Block

The number 43 will not be used this year during the World Rally Championship (WRC) rounds, as a sign of respect for Ken Block.

As a tribute to Ken Block, died on January 2 at the age of 55 following a snowmobile accident in Utah (United States), the world rally championship (WRC) has decided to retire number 43 this season. Inseparable from the American driver, the number 43 cannot therefore be used by anyone in 2023 on the WRC rounds.

“A mark of respect” WRC for Ken Block

Gymkhana master but also competitor in rally et rallycross, Ken Block took part in 25 WRC rallies in his career, mainly with Ford and M-Sport since its first participation in 2007, in the Rally of Mexico. “Given the enormous contribution our great friend Ken Block made to motorsport and the fact that he was held in such high esteem by people around the world, it is entirely appropriate that his number 43 be retired. use during the 2023 WRC season, declared the president of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Although it is a small gesture, we hope it brings some comfort to his family and friends at this time. Ken was a true legend and the memory of this true legend will live with us forever. »

Jona Siebel, Managing Director of WRC Promoter, recalled Ken Block's influence among fans in introducing all rally disciplines. “The impact Ken has had on rallying by introducing our sport to a whole new audience cannot be underestimated. For him, fan engagement was paramount, making him a beloved figure in the WRC. As a sport, the retirement of the number 43 is our small mark of respect for Ken's family, friends and fans. »
