Barely the 2020 campaign ended, the World Rally Championship WRC, heavily impacted this year by cancellations and postponements in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, is seeing its 2021 season already disrupted by current health restrictions.
The organizers of Rally from Sweden have just confirmed the cancellation of the 2021 edition, the measures taken in the face of the pandemic having been strengthened in the country.
“The organizers of Rally Sweden, the FIA and the WRC promoter fully understand that the health of the local population is the primary concern and are committed to a collective duty of care to protect both the Värmland community and the family. of the WRC, explains Glenn Olsson, rally director.
During our programming, we closely monitored the situation around Covid-19, which remains constantly evolving in the region. While we are understandably extremely disappointed, particularly given the new course, it is a decision we support. »
The WRC promoter is already working on a possible replacement solution for the only real winter event on the calendar. Logically, Finland or Norway would be preferred destinations for such a rally, with an announcement expected in the coming days.
The Swedish Rally was largely disrupted in 2020 due to very mild weather conditions compared to normal, with some stages looking more like a dirt round.
