The WRC will open to privateers in 2018

The FIA World Council held this Wednesday in Paris confirmed that the new WRC corresponding to the 2017 regulations would now be accessible to private pilots, without the obligation to be registered by a manufacturer. The Department Rally of the FIA will study each entry request.

The Federation also indicated that Michelin, Dmack and Pirelli would be the three manufacturers authorized for the events of the 2018 WRC season.

WRC 2 drivers will still have to compete in seven events, with the title determined on the best six results, but there will no longer be a mandatory event for this category.

Drivers entered on R5s without being registered in WRC 2 will be able to use any type of tire, including a manufacturer other than the three selected in WRC. This measure will allow more local drivers to be able to participate in the events.

Unsurprisingly, the WRC Trophy reserved for old WRCs is abandoned, but the 2016 WRCs will remain eligible for the Championship.

The FIA World Council also confirmed the 2018 season calendar as previously presented.
