Current WRC engines retained during transition to hybrid in 2022

Engine blocks 1.6 liters turbocharged, utilisés par les Hyundai i20 Coupe, Toyota Yaris et autres Ford Fiesta dans la catégorie reine du Championnat du monde des rallyes (WRC), will see their lifespan extended by several years.

Indeed, the World Council of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) decided on Tuesday evening March 31 to keep these engines during the transition to hybrid planned for 2022. Discussions revolved around maintaining the current engines or the adoption of R5 type engines, less powerful but also less expensive.

The FIA also announces that measures will be put in place to reduce the development and running costs of these engines. The turbo will be simplified, and crews will be allocated a smaller number of blocks per year.

In addition, the sole supplier of the hybrid system has been determined. This is the company Compact dynamics, for the seasons from 2022 to 2024. The German company is already present in Formula E, riding a Formula 1 and in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
