Drivers explain their number choice for 2019

An innocuous novelty, the drivers entered in the World Rally Championship (WRC) must from the 2019 season choose a permanent number, as is customary in MotoGP or since 2014 in Formula 1. Except for Sébastien Loeb, retained on the Dakar, all the drivers of the official teams explained the reason for their number at the Birmingham Motor Show (Britain).

Citroën

Sébastien Ogier : 1

“This is the number we are all fighting for. I want to keep it as long as possible. »

Esapekka Lappi: 4

“No particular meaning. I am very professional because 4 can replace the letter “a” of my name in the new hashtag “L4ppi”. »

Hyundai

Thierry Neuville : 11

“Nicholas (Gilsoul, his co-pilot) and I have great memories with the #11 used in 2013, when I rode with it M-Sport. We experienced great rallies and finished vice-champions. »

Andreas Mikkelsen: 89

“Andreas (Jaeger, his co-pilot) and I were born in 1989.”

Dani Sordo: 6

“I used it for the last three years with Hyundai. »

Sébastien Loeb: 19

It corresponds to his nine WRC world championship titles + 1 Junior WRC title.

M Sport Ford

Elfyn Evans: 33

“It's my initials written backwards, it's the best I could do. »

Teemu Suninen: 3

“It's a long story, I started driving with the 310 then we had to remove a number in the national categories with the 31 then another one to reach the WRC. »

Toyota

Ott Tänak : 8

“It’s the lucky number in Japan (Toyota country)."

Jari-Matti Latvala: 10

“When I joined Toyota Gazoo Racing in 2017, my number was 10. I had one of the best seasons of my WRC career. And then if you hide the 0, it gives 1! »

Kris Meeke: 5

“I asked my 4-year-old granddaughter to draw a car with a number on it, she put the number 5.”

Find it in AUTO issue 2199weeklyo, available Monday evening in digital version and Wednesday on newsstands, the Guide to the 2019 WRC season.
