Matton: “Working to popularize the WRC”

Yves Matton is well placed to discuss the prospects for the evolution of WRC. At the head of Citroën Racing from 2012 to 2017, the Belgian gave way to Pierre Budar to join the FIA as rally director.

The former leader of the Reds is particularly considering slightly modifying the course of the rally in order to further improve the show for the audience.

“We must try to better optimize the shakedown which is an investment for the organizers. At the end of the rally, it would be interesting to find a Power Stage format where we could get even more benefits... However, we must continue to work on popularizing the discipline. From Monte-Carlo onwards, spectators will learn how car tires are fitted. A better understanding of this sport will enable its development”, explained Yves Matton to AUTOhebdo.

The WRC does not seem ready to move towards electric but rather is eyeing a more viable technology with hybridization.

“I turn your question differently by saying that those who are not currently present around the table, if they come, it is because there will be hybridization. It will be important that decisions are made with the real potential players in the discipline in the future…”he replied.
