On the occasion of its last meeting of the year on the side of Bologna, the FIA World Motor Sport Council discussed the future of WRC. Among the subjects on the table, the names of the different categories of the pyramid leading to the big leagues.
This decision was taken with the aim of “ to clarify the position and objective of each category,” indicates the Federation. Thus, the FIA WRC2 Open and WRC3 Open categories become FIA WRC2 and FIA WRC3 respectively. For its part, the FIA WRC2 Junior championship is renamed FIA WRC2 Challenger for competitors with reduced experience, who have not won a series using the Rally2 specification and who are not eligible for manufacturer points. Furthermore, age will no longer be a criterion taken into account. Concerning the FIA WRC3 Junior, it is now called FIA Junior WRC Championship while the WRC3 team title will no longer be awarded.
Finally, the FIA WRC2 Masters Cup becomes the FIA Masters Cup. This is open to drivers and co-drivers from the RC2/3/4/5 and R-GT categories while the R-GT Cup is simply canceled.
